‘They’d never write “Adele – the straight singer”‘ Jessie J says sexuality is irrelevant to music

Last month she angrily rubbished claims that she was a lesbian.
And now Jessie J has again hit out at those who comment on her sexuality, saying they should focus on her music instead,
The Voice judge, who is openly bisexual, said she is fed up of her sexual preference being used to define her.

‘The bisexual label irritates me,’ she said. ‘They would never write “Adele – the straight singer”, but that’s how the world works.’
In the interview with Company magazine, she added: ‘The only thing I want to be defined by is my music and personality.
‘Plus, at the moment I’m single.’

She also denied rumours that she is dating pop star Tinie Tempah.
In April, Jessie – whose real name is Jessica Cornish – was forced to deny claims made in an unauthorised biography that she was a lesbian.
The book’s author, Chloe Govan, claimed Jessie first realised she was a lesbian at 17, but was forced to hide her true sexuality by record bosses, who said she would be more appealing to fans if she was bisexual.

Jessie was quick to deny the allegations, mocking them on Twitter. She wrote: ‘What’s that? *whispers because it’s a secret* I’m really a lesbian?!’
She added: ‘Ha! Thanks for writing yet another boring untrue story. I thought I was still dating Tinie (Tempah), Ellie G (Goulding), Mark Wright….bla bla bla! Can’t Keep Up. None of it is true.’
In March last year, Jessie revealed that she was openly bisexual, saying: ‘I’ve never denied it. Whoopie doo guys, yes, I’ve dated girls and I’ve dated boys – get over it.
‘If I meet someone and I like them, I don’t care if they’re a boy or a girl.’
The new publication says that Jessie was told by record bosses that she would be more appealing to fans if she said she was bisexual.
The unauthorised biography, written by Chloe Govan, adds that the pop star, who first realised she was ‘gay’ at the age of 17, eventually went along with the plan but was ‘incensed’ by the decision.
In the book, entitled Jessie J: Who’s Laughing Now, Miss Govan writes that Jessie went along with the charade as she was scared of losing her deal with Universal.

In March last year, Jessie, who has admitted to fancying Rihanna, revealed that she was openly bisexual and said: ‘The singer said she was single but she followed her mother’s advice in her main requirements for prospective partners was “clean fingernails, nice teeth, and anyone who looks after their feet” plus an interest in fashion.’
But Miss Cornish also admitted her style and music were not for everyone and she had toned down her look as she got older.
She said: ‘The Mystic Meg hair was my comfort blanket. But as you start seeing pictures of yourself at every angle you realise it’s about taking risks if you want your style to evolve.
‘‘I’m just growing up. I won’t lie, when you’re first bringing out music and you want people to notice, you probably overdo it, especially as a girl.
‘But I started looking at photos and thinking, “Jess, it’s too much – the outfits, the hair”. I became a bit of a cartoon. I just wanted to tone it down.
‘I’d hate it if everyone in the world liked me, my music and what I wore. It’d make it boring and I wouldn’t have anything to work towards. It’s not to everyone’s taste but I can only be me.’
The full interview appears in the June issue of Company on sale Friday.
